Nothing makes me more jazzed than the phrase new discount.  Last Friday was Find-A-Cheap-Fight-Day for myself and a very good friend. I still don't have a flight so obviously prices weren't what I consider discounted.  Luckily, Away.com's Cheap Flights 101 article opened my eyes to a whole new world of discounts.  Here's the cheat sheet:

1. Determine your booking window.  Aim to be booked by at least 3 weeks before your trip.
2. Check the search engines.  Try Cheapoair.com and Mobissimo.com in addition to the bug guys.
3. Check directly with the airlines.  This might save you a few fees.
4. Try bidding on a flight.  If you're flexible- name your price.
5. Rely on the pros.  Sites like Travelzoo.com and CruisesOnly.com send deals directly to your inbox.
6. Hop a courier flight.  Although facing steep decline, courier deals are still available in exchange for work.

This list was an eye opening breakdown into what I was doing wrong.  I could score Donna Karan jackets and Miu Miu pumps with my eyes closed.  I know that airlines must have clearance seats but didn't know how to book them!  Big search engines usually display flights from multiple carriers, but never from Independence Air or Spirit.  I tried to some of the article's advice and found the following:
Travelocity.com $480.07 flight from EWR to CUN
Continental.com $475.07 same flight
Although, flights are much lower than the $555 we were originally quoted last Friday, I still think these flights are priced a tad high.  I've decided to hold out a little more but will book at least three weeks before the trip.
